    Issues with my gym shorts

Errrm. How can I put this. On leg day I do squats as my main quad exercise. So far this year I have blown the crutch out of three pairs of shorts. I have no interest in wearing spandex, and I assume the gym population would prefer that as well.

    Any suggestions for gym shorts?

Ha ha I am in exactly the same boat! I have always worn Caterbury shorts which have lasted well, but my last two pairs (bought in may last year) blew out in a month or so. Solution was to get my mum to sew a narrow (1cm) gusset of lycra where the splits occured (basically running from leg hole to leg hole between my legs). Since this repair (8 months or so ago) both pairs have been indestructable - I squat, deadlift and lift stones in them 6 days a week.

Mum also makes my training singlets for me as my size is a little hard to find!

The best solution I have found is basketball shorts. They are loose and most have stretch type material. They are all I'll use now especially when doing squats and deadlifts. Sure, do the short shorts if you are one of those guys that like to look at them selves in the mirror but basketball shorts are a great all rounder!

For me, those basketball shorts are bloody annoying on leg day. Anything below the knees just gets in the way. That feeling of getting to the bottom of your rep and the bastards are wrapped around your knees holding you back from further depth. I've got to roll them up half way up my quad before the set so they don't get in the way.

The short short's thing isn't about being a showoff, imo. It's about comfort. Nothing in the way of a squating movement.

To Hogan, try the short shorts but with a split up both sides. Without the splits on both sides, you still run the risk of that tear at the bottom of the rep.

Yeah I kow what you mean by them hanging past your knee, it can be a distraction. I dont try and get the massive ones. Some time the tennis ones are quite stretchy too.
Just being a smart arse about the short short comment. Im a strength athlete so it kinda comes naturaly LoL!

I use some Diadora tennis shorts which are quite short but also loose which I find the best, next would be AFL football shorts, the material they are made of makes them great for squats but as mentioned they are short.

The other thing i have used which are awesome are MMA style shorts, the pair i have, have a split up the outside of both legs plus they have heavy duty spandex style material through the crotch region, plus they are made from canvas type material which is indestructable....

My mum makes me heaps of cool stuff like training clothes. She is even making me a truck pulling harness!

She is also my biggest fan and saw almost every one of my games in 22 seasons of footy, and I have no doubt she will be there at every strongman show I do.

    The MMA shorts sound good.

MO: The thought of me doing squats in light weight, split side runners shorts makes me cringe. Yep, it might work well but the "too much information" button is gonna get pressed.

Big Tim: Tell your mum that I am an XL size in shorts and prefer deep pockets so stuff does not fall out. Tell her I come mow her lawns.

I think that part of my problem is that I use a belt so the shorts tend to be a bit low on the hips and get caught on my quads plus the crutch, being lower, gets a lot more strain on it. I will go check out "stretchy" shorts that are about mid quad length.

    Hi buddy,
I use plain stretchy and baggy cotton shorts. Got pockets aswell so you can use for ipod etc..
You can get these from Lowes. No problems with any hinderance when going to full rep range.
