    Dextrose....?

    Hey guys,

One of the lads from work was telling me that I should try taking Dextrose before a workout.

Sounded a bit weird to me, so I thought I'd ask the family. (You guys)

Apparently he says its pure carbs, and you take it like a pre workout drink?

Anyone else heard of this? And, would this be a bad thing to take?

    Hi Grim,

Using dextrose or maltodextrin as a pre workout carb is very common.
The theory is that using a hi GI carb will both give added energy for workouts (so you can workout longer and with more intensity) as well as creating an insulin spike which leads to a more anabolic effect.
An anabolic effect means the body will utilise protein better for muscle synthesis.

Now, how much you have and whether you have it at all will depend on a few things. If you are lean and have often feel a bit depelted aroud training time then I'd say it's a good idea, however if you tend to put on weight easily, then any extra carbs can easily be converted to fat - which is the problem with Hi Gi carbs, all that energy unless used up has to go somewhere.

Many people use dextrose with their whey post training, for the above mentioned anabolic effect and to restore glycogen levels.

If you decide to use dextrose I'd recommend a dosage of about 30 - 40 grams initially.

Damn, 70g will sweeten everything right up!
Another option Bomber if you don't like your whey that sweet would be to use maltodextrin, although technically a complex carb (due to it's structure) it is absorbed in a very similar matter to dextrose, and isn't nearly as sweet.

Yeah, Id be careful if youve got a tendency towards fat. I've used PWO sugars and whilst they helped me put on muscle, they impacted pretty heavily around my waist line too!

Yeah i could only ever find Dextrose from the local supermarket so i would just use that but I just prefer the oats these days or amino acids (recovery X :P )depending on how I feel

I cant handle the sweetness either, so have been adding a few heaped teaspoons of Milo instead! tastes great with unflavoured protein

heh yeah back in the old CKD depletetion style workouts i'd be doing a 50g/100g whey/dextrose mix. Filled the bottle way up to the top and it'd still be damn tasty :P
