Question Question about egg white protein powders

I've heard raw egg whites are bad for you because they block absorbtion of biotin. Would reconstituted egg whites from a protein powder have the same problem? I'm thinking of using them for cooking. [Well, recipes, technically they aren't cooked are they....] Thanks.

Caracal, If egg whites do indeed block Biotin then it is likely that egg white protein would do the same.
I'd be skeptical though, eggs are a great source of protein and the effect of biotin blocking may well be extremely minimal or infact not an issue at all.

If you can provide a source mate, I'd like to check it out.

Like Bioflex has mentioned, in order to develop a biotin deficiency you'll have to eat LOTS of uncooked egg whites, or in this case, egg white protein powder. I wouldn't worry about the avidin-biotin interaction unless you are planning on abusing the egg white protein powder which is a problem all in its own.

It is only an issue if you are consuming large amounts of raw egg whites. As soon as they are cooked they are fine. You can buy frozen egg whites some places (only one place in Victoria sells them sadly) and these are 100% pure frozen egg whites which have been pasteurized, so they are still 100% bio-available protein, but the avidin or whatever in them which is the thing which can cause a vitamin deficiency is neutralized or something. So if you can frozen egg whites would be the way to go imo :)
