    Shake before bed...?

    Pre bedtime feed..

I'm gettn a little tired of cooking , eating, preparing eggwhites/cottage cheese etc before I hit the hay..

Does anyone just have a CASEIN PROTEIN shake before bed? Or even egg white protien shake? (Like Optimum Nutritions etc)

    Any comments? Product suggestions? Pro's/Cons?

Would need to be low carb etc, part of cutting diet (well maintenance anyway).

    Cheers..

Have a steak. Much more enjoyable than a shake!

Oh sorry then in that case..thanks TIM, appreciate your suggestion, and yes agreed, taste wise = would love nothing more than a steak, anytime of the day!

Though, the steak in my final meal is not really providing the slow and delayed releasing proteins that I'm after, hence the question about CASEIN PROTEIN or Egg whites powder..

That sounds good, and is similar to what ive been having over the last 4 months..

I guess I just want to know if anyone uses a CASEIN PROTEIN shake instead of real food? Maybe i could just rotate nights.

Thats my point, a steak WILL provide slow releasing proteins.

Of course you can mate, it basically comes down to personal choice and caloric needs for the day, the shake is obviously the quickest and probably lowest cal choice, i tend to actually feel better eating something, i.e omlettes, dessert (above), protien cookies or home made bars etc.. heres some Low carb choices i use during the week.

    Celery with tuna salad
    Hard boiled eggs
    Deviled eggs
    Dill pickles and cheddar cheese
1/4 cup berries with 1/3 cup cottage cheese
    Nuts
    Sunflower seeds
    Other seeds
    Low-Carb Trail Mix
    Cheese sticks, string cheese
Sugar-free Jelly, alone or with cottage cheese and a sprinkling of nuts
Cheese with a few apple slices
4-ounce plain or sugar-free yogurt with berries and flax seed meal
Smoked salmon and cream cheese on cucumber
Lettuce Roll-ups –- Roll lunch meat, egg salad, tuna or other filling and veggies in lettuce leaves
Lunch Meat Roll-ups –- Roll cheese or veggies in lunch meat (read the labels for carbs on the lunch meat)
Spread bean dip, spinach dip, or other low-carb dip or spread on the lunch meat or lettuce and then roll it up
Raw veggies and spinach dip, or other low-carb dip
Pork rinds, with or without dip
Ricotta cheese with fruit and/or nuts and/or flax seed meal
Mushrooms with cheese spread inside (or other spreads or dips)
Pepperoni Chips -- Microwave pepperoni slices until crisp.
    or found these...
    Peanut Butter Protein Balls

    1 cup sugar-free peanut butter
4 scoops (or 1 and 1/3 cups) whey protein powder -- most are low in carbs, but check -- any flavor
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Artificial sweetener to taste, about 1-1½ cup (some protein powders have sweeteners already)

If the peanut butter has more oil (natural peanut butters will vary quite a bit in the amount of oil), you'll probably need more protein powder. Also, the amount of sweetener is obviously to taste.

    Preparation:
Put all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and mix all at once.
    Then roll into balls.
If you like, roll in crushed nuts or almond meal

    then eat..

Steak would be perfect for slow release delayed protiens and low carb to boot. I actually thought egg whites were a fast digesting high BV protein that wouldnt be ideal before bed.

I usually have steak or chicken about 2 hours before bed and then right before bed i have a WPC/Casein shake (50g combined) with some fibre (oatbran) and fats (omega 3) to further slow digestion

I don't think a specific slow release protein is necessary. Just mix your WPI with whole milk. Digestion will be slowed down to that of the milk (which is what casein is made from anyway).
I just saw my parents having sex, that's the last time I visit that website.

I used to drink ON Choc Casein, but i refuse to buy it because i found it damn addictive. I ended up drinking like 3-4 a day which turned out to be pretty expensive.

Anyway from what i read, it does what its said to do, a slow digesting protein source, however i personally dont feel it keeps your hunger satisfied the way a whole meal would do. If thats not a problem for you then go ahead and take a shake before bed, its tasty, some what malty and thicker compared to whey. Not to mention drinking a shake before bed, i am guarenteed to wake up for an early morning toilet run which annoys the hell out of me.

Perhaps buy a tub, eat when you can, and drink out of convenience.

lJk, there is a lot of merit in having a shake before bed especially one that contains casein.
Contrary to popular belief, a shake which contains decent amount of liquids will actually take longer to break down than that from foods as (amongst other things) the stomach acids take far longer to penetrate the greater mass.
I read some interesting research on this recently, with this conclusion being a surprise to researchers who did expect the opposite.

That said, the solid meal will generally give a better feeling of fullness thanks to the action of chewing.

Regarding the incorporation of casein, rather than pay a lot more for a night time protein (which you will only use once a day) it can be cost effective to just buy a kg or two of plain casein.
That way, you can throw it in at 25 - 30% to your usual whey with a bit of milk at night so you have the best of both worlds.
