The Temptations in the Desert:
Mattew 4:1-11 The Gospel of the First Sunday of Lent

Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit to be tempted by the devil. He fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward was hungry. The tempter approached and said to him: "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to turn into bread."

At that the devil left him, and angels came and waited on him.


It is the symbolic period for Lent: 40 days before Easter.

Fourty days in the desert without food and water...I'm guessing you'd actually be dead! Literalism is probably not the point of the story though.
