    10km run

Did the Hill to Harbour on Sunday. It was my first 10km run, as usual it was a spur of the moment for me and i went in with no training. I did a 4km run about 4 weeks ago and a couple of 2-3km runs maybe a month before that. But before 2 months ago i couldnt even tell you the last time i have run more then 2km.

I surprised myself and I actually finished the 10kms in 59mins and i ran the entire way! It was stinking hot and there were some crazy hills too.

    Anyone else do it?

My best man, who happens to be a PE Teacher, runs the City to Surf every year with his students and he cracks the magic 60 minute mark for the 14kms every year. Not bad for a bloke in his mid 40's.

On a side note, to give you an indication of how good an athlete Guy Leech was, he used to finish regularly in the top 50 in this event.

I did the City to Surf a few years ago. A good, challenging run which was just about at the extent of my capability! I usually run 5 - 6 kms every few days then go on a good 8 - 10 km walk/run on the weekend up hills/mountains. I think I do it more for my mental health than physical. It's always relaxing and refreshing to get away into nature.

Congrats Union! thats a really good effort. you must have been proud of your ability.
i bet you are heaps fitter now too.

i can run for 40mins on the treadmill (intervals from 9km/hr - 14km/hr every ten mins) but have never timed myself outside.
I was in training last year for two 5/10 km runs but unfortuntely some issues came up and i had to pull out of both. i was also a part of a Dragonboating team around the same time and was due to compete in a team comp but that didnt happen either lol.

Hey Union, it's really interesting what you say about getting into the groove. I also noticed that I hit a zone about 8kms and then after that the rest of the run seemed substantially easier in that the effort/pain seemed to plateau.

Does anyone know why this happens?

    Isnt it the runners high????

The adrenaline and endorphines which are released significantly after a period of time are hormones which charge up your energy and stamina.

I don't know if I'd call it a high, but up til about 8kms it feels like hard work but then you seem to cross a boundary where everything just keeps going and you dont get more tired (within limits of course).

good work mate. Just keep on improving.

Do you keep a record? I've got a spreadsheet with all my PB's over various distances. Helps me focus

I record the times but I am running different courses.

Hoping to crack sub 50 10.5km at end of august. There is the lake macquarie rub and it's all flat so should be a fast time
