if not disc brakes at least "v" brakes as i know them. if there not called that in Australia then they were the technology before disc brakes (BrisGym might know what aussies call them). They were good in there day but they dont come close to discs IMO.

Any semi decent bike will come with Discs generally Hydraulic, cable discs arent so good. But as everyone has said definitely worth the higher cost.

They are called "V" brakes here and you can get some good ones (XTR, etc) but they are effected if you buckle your rim, are not really self adjusting like most Discs, and are not so good in the rain.

There are Hrydaulic V-Brakes but they are mainly for trials bikes as they have crazy instant stopping power and hold.

Can I just add that if your planning to go to Thredbo and chances are your going to have a go of the DH track, Hydraulic Discs are the only way to go.
They also have the added benefit that if you buckle your wheel badly your ride isn't over, if you have V brake - Rides over.

When I had my first run at Thredbo a few years ago about half way down the track the arm pump I had already accrued was great enough that I could no longer either brake or hold onto the bars properly and the next corner/tree saw me coming from a mile away. Lucky I had the armour on I purchased the day before.

Take your time going down the track, and definitely wear some good padding.

Im off for a road ride. ciao.

    Thanks guys!
That's confirmed then, disc brakes are a must! Hydraulic disc brakes are a bit out of my $$ range for a first MTB though...
The bike i'm looking at is a Specialised P1 - disc brakes, good components (shimano) and looks cool too. It's on special in a 2009 stock clearance, down from $1500, which is a bonus!

See what they can do for you for an upgrade even to lower quality hydraulics as they will be alot better.
Also what are you paying for it.
