GDay guys,
Yeah I have got into MTBing in the last couple of months, basically do XC riding for a bit of added fitness and fun.
Got myself a second hand Kona hardtail, with Reba world cup front forks, a few carbon bits and pieces with Mavic Crossmax wheels. So far so good and having a great time.
Mainly ride out at Lysterfield, VIC, but looking to head down to Forrest and You Yangs in the coming months.
I've been thinking about buying a bike for a while but haven't got the cash to buy a decent one. I wouldn't even wanna pay more than $200 which I'm guessing wouldn't buy me much.
Maybe I'd be better off buying a BMX and getting back into freestyle. Probably won't get much in that category for under $200 either?
I'm pretty keen to ride the trails around my place. The northwestern T-way is just down the road which leads to heaps of places like Holly said.
Btw, amazing video brisgym. What sort of bike is that? Looks like a cross between a mtn bike and a bmx to me.
I have been having some time off the bike the last 6 months as I lost some much needed motivation.
Im planning a comeback in june and ill mostly be spending my time on my bmx to bring back some much needed skill.
But when it comes to places to ride. Ill pretty much ride anywhere. Whether it be a road ride, XC, DH, bmx tracks, skate park, track cycling although i missing a road bike and track bike from my collection at the moment I have been known to do atleast a 30 to 40km road ride on my bmx when at my peak. lol. What can I say I get bored.
Seems to be more riders here each day. Who would have thought a cycling section in a bodybuilding forum.
I got a mountain bike last last year, actually the whole family went out and bought bikes. I got a Giant MB for around $400, it was reduced from $500. My wife got one a few months back for half price as it was last years stock. Like we care. The kids love riding as well.
I usually put my bike in the back of my van and drive to a trail. Lately it's been the Lilydale to Warburton trail which is 38-40 km long, depending on who you talk to. I've also been using the Eastlink Trail seeing as the start, well Mullum Mullum end , is only about 5 minutes from my house.
I've always got the backpack on with a 3lt water bladder with a tube feeding above my right shoulder so I can drink anytime. Always have the MP3 player going as well. I never home without some form of music.
Rajah you've got it worked out. Sounds like a good day out that.
I originall just wanted something that could handle concrete paths but will probably want to up the ante as i get into it more. I'd be happy to have a half price bike from last season too. A trip to the bike shop is on the cards.
Brisgym, maybe that dude's bike is just a 50" MTB, hence better for tricks?
I'm just about to buy my first mountain bike - off to thredbo over the summer for some off trail initiation.
Is it worth getting a half decent bike with disc brakes for a total beginner? I've ridden and raced road bikes a fair bit, but never done any offroading...
any advice appreciated!
"I can't remember if I'm the good twin or the evil one..."
All depends on your budget and timeframe for purchasing a bike, I ended up going second hand one and ended up getting an awesome bargain for what I paid, disk brakes, ex-race bike, super light, top of the line parts etc etc for about $1000.
I would have been really struggling to get something even half as good brand new.
Also depends on if your going to be riding often, if it is only for a couples of trips i think you should be able to hire bikes around some of these areas and they are pretty good bikes at good prices.
Just something to think about.
I also debated about disc brakes before I chose my bike.. All in all it was only about $100 difference and after been on many rides now, I believe the disc brakes have been beneficial.
Cheers...
Great to see there are lots of people into MTB, you guys that are over east are lucky as you have all the good trails over there!
I havent done much riding lately as its to hot haha, i usually ride trails/dj/dh at Goat Farm, Mundaring area, and down south.
My bike is 24" DMR Sidekick, that i built with all different parts, kinda keen to get a full sus im getting to old for a hard tail these days haha.
disc brakes are definately worth the extra money in my opinion, beginner or not.
