mate i would look at a yamaha fzr if you don't have much cash. The honda's, although i own and love, are too expensive when talking about cbr250.

I currently have a ZX6R Ninja. unfortunately it has been a while since riding due to work but i am looking at getting a CBR1000RR Fireblade 2009 model now that i have some free time.

is 1989 very old for a bike in comparison to a car for example, as in how many km's should one of these last?

do these bikes have a reputation as a reliable bike? the internet has mixed reponses and i would like a review from someone i trust..

are road bikes expensive to run in he form of services?

lastly, am i wasting my money? should i keep saving for something newer(remember i am a broke ass uni student) !

thanks guys! cant wait to get a motorbike i grew up on them on the farm, and i am looking foward to using one to get to gym and around.

Zoo, you are no doubt in the position like many young guys, just having secured a licence and wanting the coolest machine you can afford.

The CBR250's like the ZXR's and YZF's were only ever brought into Australia as "grey imports", rather than officially sold by the dealers. These bikes became very popular when importation from Japan got big as due to our local laws restricting anything bigger than a 250 ,these beat almost anything available (apart from the widow maker RGV250 of course!)

Definietly a big step up from the ZZR and Across's which previous generations had to deal with, however like any little motor designed to rev exceptionally hard (almost to 20,000 rpm) reliability is going to be an issue.

Looking down the barrel at a bike with an unknown history, 20 years old which engine has likely been very stressed I'd be wary. Rebuilding the engine properly could easily cost more than the $2400 you are going to pay for the bike, so unless it's been rebuilt before - and they have receipts to prove it, again be careful

Now that we have the new lams laws I'd seriously consider something a bit bigger. A less highly tuned 600 which fits the bill would be much more reliable and more versitile too.

If you do proceed with the CBR just make sure you have it checked over very well first.

    *Bump*

I got knocked off my bike in traffic a few weeks ago (dont get me started or this will soon degrade into a rage thread!). Ive had some 'interesting' events these last few weeks - also got broken into. I refuse to link these things to 'luck' - hence I am referring to them as interesting events!

Anyway got rear ended in traffic by a cage driver who was not looking (obviously) - I was 100% stopped sitting in traffic, next minute i'm on my a$$ wondering how I got there!

The bike is a write off. It was an oldie but a goodie - 1991 ZZR 600.

So. Im shopping for a new bike. Looking for any recommendations in the 600 range.

Prob the standard R6, CBR, GSX-R, ZX6R comparisons.....

After riding dirt bikes and quad bikes since my teens... i decided to get my L's last week.

Now im deciding what bike to get... im thinking a WR450 until i get off my L's and P's however i have been eyeing off hyosung GV 650 cruiser. Its a restrcited learner legal.. but can easily be powered back up to 60kw @220kg (goes hard). But i dont wanna look like a wannabe harley rider.. riding a Hyosung - v-rod look a like.

what do you reckon? I looked at the yammy and honda but they're just slugs.

Yeh I'm not a big fan of those Hyosungs Union. But in fairness I've never ridden one - AND I dont have to deal with those Learner Legal rules either.

How long do you need to be on your restricted bike for on your L's.....12 months?

I got lucky and got my license 2 years ago in Brissie and did the test on a 650, allowing me an unrestricted license straight away. I'm on my second road bike now (had hundreds of off road over the years) - Currently riding a BMW R1200 GSAdventure - taking her up to the Cape in June...

Mate unfortunately riding anything with a v configuration will have you looking like a harley wanna be, and it DOES look like a V-rod. But consider that its only the Harley riders that will really care... the other 98% of people in the world will just think you got a cool bike.

What kind of money are you looking at paying?

Good thinking, its your first bike, so going the cheap option (and of course learner legal) is the right way to go.

If your going to get a Sporty, you made the right choice, the Irons are great looking bikes, unfortunately you will still be looked down upon by other Harley riders for riding the "Girls" version, which i don't get because plenty of Sporty's smoke the bigger bikes off the line. But when you pay $30,000 + for a bike, i guess you earn the right to look down on everyone, even other Harley riders.

I went for a Triumph for my ride (07 Bonneville black) coz i didn't want to run with the Harley crowd, though i like the bikes. I really like the Dyna series, much more than the softails, i also love 80's Shovel heads.

My old man used to ride Bonneville's in the 60's/70's so there was that connection as well, and in my extremely biased opinion they are the best bikes on the planet, and the only other bike that gets some sort of respect from every bike rider, especially Harley.

This is my pride and joy. Bought a wrecked SV650S and put it back on the road with a fair bit of customisation along the way!
