    In a perfect world....

Sad reality? Being 16 doesn't always mean much in regards to matabolism et al. When I was teaching I was stunned at the level of obesity of kids starting Year 7 and getting worse as they progressed.

However, I do agree that the scales aren't necessary, but then I do see the value in being able to "track" losses, if only as a guide.

My DEXA scan the other day showed just how useless BF numbers are with my relatively expensive Tanita scales reading nearly 7 percentage points higher than the test which was conducted a few hours after I weighed in.

    Cheers

Well said. Just eat less and continue to be progressive in your training. Chuck in cardio. Leaning up really isn't rocket science. Scotties post just about covers it.

All you need to do is what Big Tim mentioned, eat a healthy balanced diet, be active in the gym and aerobically, and don't stress so much about it...
Its a very simple objective you're trying to achieve, stop trying to over-complicate things!
I know what your trying to say but with the knowledge i have learnt i cant just go with simple guide lines without some extent.

I rather not make a mistake i see in people my age, not eating enough, training wrong etc.

I aint really stressin its just i need this scale which i cant find. Why do i need a scale? its not a counter productive test which i conclude from and get shattered by the results, its more of like a guide line to conclude from.

Yes that is true. As time progresses obesity in young children will increase.

Yes to "track losses and to use a guide to conclude" from. Thats is why.

I would never invest in any kind of updated scale (due to there accuracy) there is no point. A simple digital pound to kilo rate accurate scale is fine and if you want a accurate bf measurement DEXA scan is the accurate thing to skin fold testing.

This is what i mean by such simple guide lines. Just imagine a 100kg 18yo male with 20% bf meaning 20kgs of bf. You give him some guidelines to follow. He doesent eat much, does cardio etc from that anyone could alter the way you gave them the info eg they may do more cardio, not eating enough meaning deficit is to high, macros may be to low etc.

= to a 80kg male who has lost alot of his worked up progress

or to a 80-90kg male who has preserved his muscle maybe even gained some.

I rather not make a mistake as like others my age do.

Sorry if posts are a tad long i have alot of time to answer ;)

I see what you're worried about, but you're not going to just lose everything you worked for just because you're leaning up. You'd have to go on an EXTREMELY bad diet as well as stop training altogether for something like that to happen.

Anyways, this is why I said to continue to be PROGRESSIVE in your weight training. Use that as your guide. If you can at least maintain your performance in the weight room or better yet continue to be progressive, then you're NOT going to lose your muscle. Don't worry so much about it. If your diet really is that bad, then it will reflect in your performance in the weight room. As long as your performance is good, then its all good. At your stage of the game anyway. It would be a different story if you had been training for several years and you gotta train a bit smarter to gain more or maintain. But at your age and training experience, there's nothing to do but grow, even if your diet isn't all that good.

However, I respect your dedication and thats all good, I'm just trying to say (as well as Scottie) that for YOUR goal, its really not complicated. Not one bit. You said it yourself that your not looking to get into contest shape, just lose some body fat. Simple guidelines are all you need at this point in time, you got nothing to lose. Just remember, and I say this all the time - progressive!

At least you're doing what so many your age don't do.

Keep at it mate. I wish I had started on this journey many decades ago. When I got married at 19, I was a very lean 80k, a product of 2 games of rugby league a week, and a game of soccer a week, and the training that goes with them. Within the first year of marriage I put on about 15k of blubber as I stopped all physical activity as I embarked on building my career and my family. Over time I added another shitload of blubber and peaked at about 135k and was headed for an early grave. Thankfully, I saw the light, and I mean THE light, and I got focussed.

You are focussed and you're young. That puts you in a great position.

    Congrats.

Yeah congrats mate, you're gonna go a long ways with the commitment you have at your age. Keep up the good work and your hunger for learning. Either way you go about it, you'll get to where you want to be, believe it and believe in yourself.

I hope waiting for these scales to materialise isn't stopping you from working towards the goals you have stated in this thread? At 6 weeks or so into it, you should be seeing some good results, yeah?

I don't have scales in my house (cept kitchen ones) for various reasons but if i want to weigh myself i use some old clinical scales at work. I use the same ones as different scales can give different readings. Could you do something like that?

Hey mate I hate to be harsh, but if you keep making excuses you will never, ever get the results you are after.

I can't remember who said it, but "you don't get stronger from osmosis". In your situation, posting on a bodybuilding forum about how tough it is to get started without scales, and how little time you have after attending school 5 hours a day, isn't going to get you leaner. Just get out there and do it.

Oh and by the way, Target sell digital scales for about $20-$30, I am sure they work fine.
