I'm sick of all this opposition to everything. Maybe they should redirect their anger towards all the fat kids eating mcdonalds or hot chips with gravy after school... surely that's worse. Will these zealots ever be happy?

Good on her, she does athletics and just wanted to build her own confidence by getting on stage, thats the way i read the atricle.

Head of Child Psychiatry at Newcastle University Louise Newman said that bodybuilding could involve unhealthy practices

deadset so can the internet, taking a walk, riding a bus, even schools in some suburbs are not safe environments to be in.

everyone knows what the conotations of the experts will be, ie drug abuse and eating disorders, and they are the worldy experts that advise policy in this country.

what a shining example to girls around the country, this young girl is. Do the experts want her in fornt of the tv and computer, so she becomes like the normal muffin top, white tights, ug boot wearing youth that seems to have invaded society in the last 20 years.

IF the parents where pushing her to do this then yeah, id have a problem. But if she wants to do this for herself then all power to her.

They aren't promoting that she lift heavy weights (something to do with developing bone structure isnt it?) so I dont see a problem.

    Agree 100%

However, if it was my daughter i'd encourage her to postpone competing til about the age of 15, though if it was something that she really wanted to do i think i'd have to compromise. You can't always control what your child wants to do and is interested in, in my case i'm sure it's a case of "monkey see, monkey do". Ocassionaly i do a workout at home and if my daughter (6.5yrs old) is around, she'll jump at the chance to do some weights, she loves it. I don't discourage it (it is exercise), i just make sure she uses something very light (cause of her age) - if i can i try to persuade her to do exercises without weight (push-ups, star jumps etc)... even that isn't safe given the last time she was doing push-ups she decided to do 1 arm push-ups! I can't lie though, it made me proud :D

100% correct. If its the kids decision then great parents decision then not good.

Shame my five year old does push ups with me. Then some star jumps on her own and shows me her huge muscle growth just after. Its wonderful.

So? I was young once and i sure as hell wasn't going to let anyone tell me what i could, or couldn't do with my body that comes naturally & that nature affords me the right to do.

I wouldn't like my kids doing it, but still, everyone has their rights...

From what I've heard it seems most are concerned about a 10 year old posing in a bikini in front of adults. I have to say that's the part I'm a bit 50/50 on.

Not all 10 year olds make well judged decisions and the parents should make the final decision on whats appropriate for their daughter - I pressume they did in this case as they contacted the promoter. Whether or not you agree with their decision is another subject.

Good on the girl for being interested in fitness and health and aspiring to be fit and healthy. I'd keep her out of exibitions until she was a more appropriate age (16+)

    Have fun

Sorry, but this confuses me..... are you in favour of 10 year olds having sex?

The competing bit is what im not too keen on too. Body image is such a huge headfuck and I hate to think of young girls and boys being set up so early.

good on her. Even if parents are pushing her into it it will teach her discipline and make her better for it later in life.
