    pressure build up in ears..

    hi all,

ive recently been noticing more and more often that when i workout pressure builds up in my ears (like when you quickly descent in altitude kinda feeling) except my ears wont 'pop'.. it sometimes gets really bad like i struggle to hear ppl talking to me at the gym..

..anyone else experienced this or know what i could do to stop it from happening.. my google search did not yield too much information except that maybe i should drink more water and make sure i eat before training, but i have that covered, so not too sure what else i could do..

    cheers

It is probably clogged eustachian tubes. Your middle ear is connected to the back of your throat by a thin tube. This allows your middle ear to be equalised to the external pressure. The popping sound you hear when you change atmospheric pressure is the air opening your tubes or pushing past an obstruction.

Blockages can be painful as you can pump air up them into the ear but there is not enough power behind the small air space to equialise when the external pressure is reduced. e.g. taking a deep breath then lifting causes an increase in pressure in the chest cavity which is transferred into your ears. The ear gets forced up there but cannot get back down. Minor differences in pressure cause the "deafness" feeling. The air usually leaks out slowly over an hour or two. Healthy ears equilise without you knowing it. In extreme cases you can be on the floor writhing about, and/or burst an ear drum.

I suggest you get your GP to check your ears. On the other hand it may be just a matter of avoiding dairy products or any other foods that you find gives you mucous.

i dont use any solvents to clean my ears, so may look into that..

i have concentrated a bit more on breathing right, and it does seem to help, so it may be a breathing issue.. i think im gonna focus on that, and should it not improve, i will go see a doctor..

    thanks a lot guys
