    Sleep problems

    Hi Doc,

I have, in the last 14 months dropped from 120kg to 91kg by hitting the gym hard, eating right and exercising properly. During this 14 months my slepp was excellent and woke feeling ready for the next day.

As of about a month ago I've noticed that I am really tired in the mornings and find it hard to get going. Bed time has not changed but the family has grown from 1 child to 2, although neither keep us awake at night.

I am taking a multi vitamin and not having any caffeine etc prior to bed.

IS there any reason this has started to happen?

    Thanks

Could be a lot of things.

Do you have something on your mind? Problems in your personal life etc?

Do you eat a lot of tuna? A friend of mine was having terrible sleep problems a few years ago, anyway tests concluded that he had very high levels of mercury in his brain which was affecting his sleep. Canned tuna in even fairly modest amounts (few tins a day) can cause this!

Maybe you just need a bit more sleep? It not uncommon for people to need more sleep when they get older? How old are you?

I would suggest going to your GP if it persists and having bloods done. There are 101 things it could be!

Wow, that's really scary about the tuna. I usually eat one can a day.

Most people are fine though. I eat a few most days and have been fine. However if I eat it too late in the day I struggle to sleep.

Probably depends on what brand you buy as well.

Consider having your cortisol levels checked. I recommend a Cortisol, DHEA-S saliva test (at various intervals of the day) over an AM blood test. Cost is $125.

Are you carrying more body fat in your umbilical region? (In reference to other areas of your body).

    +1 on Haemoglobin.

I had the same thing at the same stage in my weightloss. Doc said I was anaemic - but it was due to the higher levels of sports and activities I was doing.

I started taking an iron additive and it all came good.

Actually, the latest research suggests the opposite is the case.

I'm with Belmont; get your DHEA/Cortisol checked, but I would also get your melatonin tested, also via saliva over several times during the day.

Magnisium and Zinc tablets before you go to bed helps release cortisol which will give you a better nights sleep

Magnesium is a cheap and easy option to try. I'd test yourself first though earlier in the day with magnesium before trying this. If you are deficient in magnesium (which most people are) it may have a stimulating effect initially that will keep you awake. Try a magnesium diglycinate (I like a Metagenics product called CalmX for this over ZMA).
