    Mortons Neuroma

    Hi Guys,

A few months back I was diagnosed with Mortons Neuroma in my left foot between my 3rd and 4th toes.

Anyway I can walk for about 15 minutes then I'm in a lot of pain. I've had orthotics for the last year or so and have had the left one modified so that it splits my 3rd and 4th toe, so at least when I have shoes on the pain isn't too bad.

I am now trying acupuncture ( more like electric shock therapy ) and have seen ( I believe) some small improvements.

My next step would be surgery but I haven't heard good things about that option.

I was wondering if anyone knows anything about the condition and can give me some advice?

    cheers.

    Hey BOBG,
The most important thing is that you keep pressure off the sides of the toe.
The orthotics are very important, make sure your shoes are wide enough too keep the toes apart.
I have heard good news and bad about having the op.
    Good luck

Avoid shoes that compress your forefoot (bring the bones together). You need a wider forefoot to give the metatarsals room to expand and reduce pressure on the neuroma.

Acupuncture can help, and Podiatry, as well as avoidance of the things that irritate it. Before surgical intervention, you should explore the possibility of a cortisone injection - not pleasant, but better then the surgical option. I have had many patients over the years who have had the surgery and the results have been good. Nevertheless, in some women, particularly, the neuroma has returned, no doubt due to footware choices.
