    falling asleep prob

Doc, i'm having falling asleep issues and i'm thinking it is one of the pre sleep supps i'm taking. I have a 50mg of zinc tablet, a 250mg magnesium tablet 30 mins b4 bed and prior to bed have a small protein drink with 2g of L-glutamine in it with water. Any thoughts?

Lemme know if you need more detail about whatever.cheers.

Is this a recent thing only since you've started taking these supplements?

only recent. around when i started talking the zinc and mag before bed. i realise that it would indicate that i should stop either of the two but i thought they were supposed to help rest. What do you think?

I hate to state the obvious, but have you tried going 1 week without taking the supps pre-sleep, or removing 1 at a time in a process of elimination? If not, might be worth a try.

    What he said.

Or, try taking them earlier, and not with your protein drink.

Some vitamins / minerals / herbs / supplements have a tendency to stimulate your brain and nervous system whilst being absorbed and processed.

While it is true that our bodies rejuventate and our high cell renewal and growth occurs during sleep, a lot of supplement manufacturers and natural practitioners advise not taking supplements, particularly antioxidants and trace minerals, before bed because they will keep you awake, thus taxing your body of its precious sleep and actually having the opposite effect of what you desire.

Not sure that zinc/magnesium are touted as sleep aids, other than magnesium is a muscle relaxant.

Maybe taking them in the long term will provide with better sleep overall, but I doubt popping them like a "sleeping pill" before bed is going to have an immediate effect.

    Minerals dont work like that.

Let us know how you go if you experiment with your dosage levels and times.

I'd stop taking them for a week or two and see how you go.

If it's not the pre-bed supps it could be a range of things, physiological and also mental/emotional. Maybe investigate a bit

Other than that I could suggest getting on GABA rather than Zinc/Mag supps

Not instead of, as well as. Regardless of the sleep benefits, there are many advantages in supplementing with zinc and magnesium.

When I first started taking ZMA caps before bed I noticed for about a week or 2 i would struggle to fall asleep...

After that initial period, i found that i'd fall asleep much faster and also have a mcuh deeper sleep... So perhaps persevere with it for a little while and if no change after a couple of weeks then cease using them for a some time, see if your sleep patterns normalise...

I have read somewhere (maybe a thread on SM) that ZMA actually can have a stimulant type effect on some people, as in it causes the mind to speed up rather than slow down before rest... Might be worth digging a little deeper to see what u can find about that...

I take Animal Pak upon waking, and before bed.

Don't notice it keeping me awake any more than without...
