    Pain in Hip

    Hey Doc

I believe I have some sort of impingement (sp?) in my right hip.

I deadlifted last night - no pain whatsoever. Drove home (30mins) and when I tried to move my right leg from under the steering wheel to on the ground outside the car I had significant shooting pain radiating from the very top of my thigh, on the front of my leg. The pain felt strong enough that I thought my leg was going to give way.

Once I was up and walking the pain remained (at a much reduced throb, rather than an acute pain) for maybe 5 minutes - walking seemed to help reduce the pain.

The shooting pain struck me twice more last night - once when I tried to stand up out of a chair in a restaurant (in a movement similar to getting out of the car) and once when I was rolling over in bed.

As I said, I think I have impinged a nerve in the hip, does this sound right? If so, is there much I can do about it, and am I likely to aggravate it further by staying mobile on it?

I am working my security job tonight, which means I will be on my feet for 8 hours, and potentially running up stairs etc.

Hi Tim, you may have given your hip capsule a bit of a shake up, especially if the pain is sharp, over the front of the hip and down into the quad area. Nerve pain typically comes from the back and goes down the back of the leg, and is associated with pins and needles and other neurogenic signs.

Get some anti-inflammatories into you mate - Voltaren Rapid 25 from the chemist and take as directed. Gently move the hip (rotation type movements), but be gentle on it for a few days, as it sounds inflamed. It's not uncommon to tweak the joint from time to time. If it doesn't settle significantly in a few days, get it checked out and let me know how you progress.

This describes the pain precisely. I will get some Voltaren today and see how is goes.

Thanks mate, I really appreciate the advice.

    Hey Doc,

I haven't had the pain since Thursday night, and squatted today with no issues (200kg PR - BOO-YAH!)

So looks like I might be out of the woods. I will keep the voltaren up though.

Good to hear mate. I would perhaps suggest warming your hips up a little before heavy work for the next few weeks - say on a stepper or X-trainer for 5 mins, then do some hip rotations just to keep the joint capsule happy.
