    Right Wrist pain

    Good Morning Doc,

Over the last 2 weeks i have been experiencing pain in my right wrist...
It only occurs when doing flat bench press.. both DB and BB, the pain is far greater with the DB's.
The higher the wait the more intense the pain eg. last night 1st set was fine with 30kg DB next set at 35 was to painful to even complete 2 reps.
Its a very sharp pain and it subsides immediately after the weight is gone..

I have attached a picture of the area i mention..

    Thanks

Hi Brom, are you performing the pressing movements with your wrists extended or straight? And, how does it feel when you do things like push-ups or just pushing up to get out of a chair, etc? Was it after a particularly heavy pressing day that it came on?

If it's painful, you may have damaged some of the cartilage in the joint. The wrist joint is quite a complex interplay with a lot of small bones involved.

I would suggest icing it, applying some topical anti-inflammatory gel (Voltaren Emulgel or Feldene Gel), and give it a rest for a while from pressing movements. If it doesn't settle down, get it checked out with some x-rays or an assessment by a physio or hand therapist. If it's really bothersome, see your doctor for some scans - CT or bone scan to find the hot spot. If it's nothing severe it will settle. If not, you may need a cortisone shot or referral to an upper limb orthopaedic specialist.

When you start to re-introduce your pressing movements, invest in some wraps and watch your technique to avoid excessive compression of the small bones in the wrist.

    Keep us updated.

    Brom,

Have u ever heard of carpel tunnell syndrome? Its a more serious developed form of RSI and the symptoms you describe sound like you should get checked out for this.
My mum has it - she has been a piano player her whole life.
Im sure it wouldnt hurt to get checked out for carpel tunnel.
    Just a suggestion.

    Cheers,

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is an inflammatory disorder, typically characterised by pins and needles due to nerve compression in the carpal tunnel, as well as night symptoms.

The pain Brom has, at the moment, is situational/functional, related to compression of the carpal joint, that's why it goes away when you stop the aggravating activity.

Hi Doc thanks for all the info so far...

The pain occurs when my wrists are straight preforming flat pressing movements.
Incline bench press there is no noticeable pain at all, and hardly any pain if i do flat pressing movements on a smith machine...
as for push ups and general getting up etc.. no pain what so ever.

I have no idea where it came from it was just "There" one pressing session

    Ok just an update..
booking in today to see the GP for a referral for X-rays etc..

Trained shoulders last night and had not had an issue with the wrist up until last night.
exact same pain as per flat bench when i was preforming DB shoulder press..

so frustrating as ive just changed my training to Max OT and this wrist issue is going to kill that
