There was a doco on TV a year or 2 ago that summarised recent research (done here in Oz) that over turned the previous 70 years of what was believed to be the understanding of lactic acid.
In short, lactic acid works in our favour. As we exercise our brain is sending a signal to our muscles asking them to contract. As we fatigue this signal disperses and signal strength is lost. This is where lactic acid comes in to play, it prevents the signal from dispersing and in affect acts like a repeater increasing signal strength and hopefully allowing you to perform more contractions. The challenge here is to accustom yourself to higher levels of lactic acid, once you can do this you can perform better.
