    Inflamed Deltoid ?

    Hi guys,

About 3weeks ago after a hard shoulder workout i think i really strained my shoulder side delt, i went to the doc after my left shoulder deltoid became very swollen and tense/hard and had a few hard lumps on the swollen deltoid muscle !!

The muscle wasnt sore just very inflamed/swollen and lumps ontop of it , so the GP sent me for a ultrasound and when the results came back they said the deltoid was very bruised and the lumps were bleeding pockets ? so then i asked was the muscle torn and they said no !!!

So the GP said give it 2 weeks and you should be right !! well it's been 3 weeks now and i havnt trained my upper body cause of the swelling, the swelling has gone down a fair bit and the lumps have gotten smaller and bruises seem to be rising to the serface .

My question is has anybody else had this and does it sound like a small tear due to the bleeding and they couldnt see in the ultrasound ??
also what the time frame on tears healing ??

    Thanks

That's quite an unusual problem! Most of the time you'd see tearing in the muscle, and the deltoid is easy to see because it's so superficial. You may have burst a few small blood vessels which have bled into the iinterstitial spaces or fascial layers. My advice to you is to see a physio asap and get them to have a good look at it. You would benefit from treatment to clear that old blood out and get some movement back in the shoulder.

I've seen something similar to this when someone purposesly put little holes in their muscle, which caused a bleed.

Must have been a killer workout! What exercises were you doing?

    Doc.

The norm. which is front smith press, side dumbell press, side & front raises, rear delts bent over dumbell style and tricep's !!!

Thats what i couldnt understand why if it isnt a tear , is it still normal for it to be swollen this long and the little lumps still there ????

Did you do any therapy on it yourself? Have you done anything to speed up the healing process? Ice and arnica work wonders immediately after injury. You could still buy a tube of arnica cream to put on it to help speed up healing..

Absolutely - ICE, topical arnica, voltaren gel, lasonil (to break up clots) would all help.

With things like this mate - give it 4-6 weeks.

My suggestion is you get it checked by a physio for a decent assessment and advice.

Well lucky enough the past couple days i have been using a borrowed ultrasound machine for therapy !! and do it twice a day and it appears it's starting to really heal the muscle quicker !!!

I think it is a small tear personally that needs healing
