    my shins kill when running on a tredmill

    hey,
    everytime i try to start doing cardio which isnt that often, my shins start to hurt... it's like a sharp burning pain i get in my shins.. i've notice it on the tredmill and only when i start to jog for over 2 mins or so... i pushed passed the pain on monday when jogging on the treadmill... i've been told once that it could be my shoes... though never had the problem when i was younger at the athletics carnivals... i know this may sound stupid but is there a stretch for you shins??

    also on monday started getting chest pains on my right side... which is my lungs, correct? woould it be cause i'm really unfit and my lungs arent used to the cardio?

    dont really wanna have to go to athletes foot and have to over $200 for a shoe that i'm only gonna use every so often... but might be my only choice...

    i found a change in shoes stopped it for a little while for me, but it came back soon enough.

    The more you run the less it will occur. Its just your body getting used to it.

    stop running on the tready, they are increadibly hard on ankles,knees and hips, as well as shin splints as you are experiencing, especially if you are carrying any weight.

    three possible solutions.

    1) stretch
    2) use a non impact type of cardio ie bike,elliptical,rower,step machine
    3) find out where your nearest golf course is and run the fairways, much more forgiving then the tready or the road, and you are also outside which imho is a huge bonus

    I agree that it could be the shoes you are using, which might not only be impacting on your shins, but also on your ankles, knees etc due to a lack of proper support.

    You said that you dont do much running, so hence maybe why you are getting the chest pain - due to the extertion.

    I have only started to take an interest to running and i am building myself up for a marathon. I have found that doing interval running has greatly assisted me in my endurance during my runs. Maybe you should give that a try and see if that helps....

    I used to get bad shin splints when running or sport...

    I found plenty of intense calf training sorted them out,
    important to do all 3 excercises to hit each part.

    (Standing raise, seated raise, calf extensions)

    The chest pain could be what's called "chest wall pain", which is not cardiac related, it's simply your inners pushing up and against the thorax cavity and it creates mild pain.

    Other causes of shin splints are:

    Poor running technique;
    Tight, stiff muscles in the lower leg;
    Running with excessive forward lean;
    Running with excessive backwards lean;
    Landing on the balls of your foot; and
    Running with your toes pointed outwards.

    You know what they are!

    This excercise invloves flexing and extending your ankle out (pointed away from you.) There are dedicated machines or you can just use leg press machine.

    It's your running technique and everything below your knees as cardio pixie points out.
    You've probably only been used to walking day in day out since those athletic carnivals many years back?
    If you are not accustomed to running or working the lower half of your legs then it will occur.

    As well as shoes also, but i can bet my money that it is because your lower half can't handle the new strain.

    Switch to the bike. Sounds like jumping straight into a run is not time yet.

    Like M.O said, switch to another cardio machine that has lesser impact on your joints etc - unless you specifically want to become a runner.

    thanks guys for your replies i'll take it all into consideration and try to use the bikes and see how that goes...

    i'm not used to running i do it from time to time but usually just walking around a job site climbing up and down ladders/scaffolds and stairs... never really train calves figured there not small so i'll concentrate on everything else until i start to notice them lagging...

    but as i said i'll take everything you guys have said and put it to good use... thanks again...

    I had the same same problem with shin splints and went off and spent 200 + bucks on some Brooks and man what huge improvement! No more pain however I did cut back on my duration times on the tready and built up to longer perids over time, and also made sure I ran on a flat Tready ( not inclined ).By the way those Brooks lasted 4 times longer than the el cheapo shoes as well.
