How to reduce High Blood Pressure?

    Hi Guys,

Just found out by accident the other day that I have high blood pressure.
Was around my paraents place on the weekend and used their blood pressure monitor and it was unexpectedly high. I have been on a bulking diet for the past 4 months and put on alot of weight fast and think this is whats done it. Also no cardio for 2 years, but my bodyfat level is not high.

Went to the doctor on Monday and got a reading of 160/100 which is rated as high. So got some x-rays done and a ultrasound, then again today (Wed), I deposited them a 24 hour urine collection and got blood tests done. Got some pill to take. Will get test results back on Monday to determine what is causing the high blood pressure.

I'm starting to do cardio now and eating a real clean diet with nothing salty.
Really hoping I can get it down naturally.

Has anybody had high blood pressure before and reduced it naturally and kept it low?
If so, what did you do to reduce it?

    Thanks

    hey mate,

i may expect some hereditary HBP too as both my parents(old man has had heart attack) and younger sister hav HBP, im due to get it checked again shortly!

i had it checked about 2 months ago and it was 134/64 which is relatively good. (yeah?)

but i too would like some info to help curb this 50/50 chance of getting HBP?
MT diet would help i imagine?

    Hi Rix,

    Thanks for your reply.
My mother does have high blood pressure and pretty sure my fathers is higher than normal too, they both take pills for high blood pressure.

Last time I checked was about 1 1/2 years ago and it was normal at 120/80.

Doctor didn't think my bad diet would have caused this high blood pressure, so it could be genetic/hereditary.

    Thanks,

I'm gonna hit the treadmill nightly for a while to see what happens.
Did my first session last night for 25 mins wearing jeans and bare feet.

I think I'll wear shoes and shorts next time and go a bit harder and longer.

Is 30mins a good amount of time to do cardio?
Should I be going for a heart rate of about 80% max?

    Thanks

I find HIT on a exercise bike excellent for getting fitness up quick.. 1min HIT, 1 min recovery etc, for 15-20 minutes. Keep a log of calories/ distance/ level of intensity.. and do your best to improve ED

    Hi,

I've been where you are. Blood pressure meds.... yada yada... Apart from the obvious dietary changes, losing bodyfat, cardio fitness etc, I've taken a mostly natural therapy approach to reducing mine.

Have you had your Homocysteine levels checked? if so, and if high, then B complex vitamins may help. I recommend a good B complex anyway. Many men are B deficient anyway.

    What's your potassium intake like?

You could also consider supplementing with magnesium, Vitamin E, Vitamin D (a rising and alarming percentage of people are D deficient).

Anti-oxidants like alpha lipoic acid and co-enzyme q10 will also be beneficial.

Quality of sleep can effect BP. I use melatonin to deal with this.

    Good luck.

there is some value in those sups.. CoQ10 is backed with some quantifiable research, and worth taking. But if you say you have been a lazy fucker then I would hit the cardio ..

    Thank for the replies.

Take2, I don't know what Homocysteine levels are or what all those supplements do.
I think I have to see the results of my blood tests on Monday and see if anything dodgy is going on from the x-rays and ultrasound.
I would prefer to not have to take any extra pills/supplements if I can help it.

I think the cardio will help me get some quick results, hoping so.
I have been very lazy lately trying to avoid any physical activity apart from weight training 3 times/week, to burn any calories unneccasarily because I wanted to bulk up.

    Thanks

Mate I understand your reluctance to take extra things, but I was much worse than you at the point of diagnosis, and I am very healthy today, mainly through natural supps.

As for Homocysteine: it's not routinely tested for, but is a good marker for cardiovascular health et al. It's worth having done.

    Cheers
