Twelve months! not two lol sorry must have been thinking one thing while fingers were typing something else.
I am thinking my problem may have been eating to many eggs a day? I thought it was ok to eat 6 whole eggs a day but now I'm reading it should only be one to two eggs a day to have no effect on cholesterol?
Have you adjusted your eating any other ways Jinx? Did you add carbs in as per your Doc's advice? Or are you still 100% Keto?
Hey cmjk
Ive been off the diet completely for the past couple of weeks but have decided to go back on to it as I have had a noticeable shift in my moods already. I plan on lowering things like cheese and eggs in an attempt to lower my cholesterol and get tested again in a couple of months.
Interesting thread. I'm getting serious about fat loss, hence looking into keto dieting and to discover it may increase my moods is a bonus.
Btw Jinx, I know it can be embarrassing but the more mental illness is discussed openly, the less stigma there will be attached to it. I used to worry about disclosing it but the fact is, it's a condition/disease many people suffer just like asthma or cancer etc. and people don't mock or think less of people with those diseases. Perhaps you just don't want to share personal things like that with strangers. I also understand that but I'm sure they won't treat you differently. I've discussed it on SM before (albeit hesitantly at first) and nothing has changed.
Anyway, I thought I'd post because i just found this on bodybuildingdotcom... "The issue of blood lipid profile is experiencing much debate due to the fact that for some people following the ketogenic diet, they will experience a drop in cholesterol levels, while for some it will increase."
I'd definitely cut out cheese or greatly reduce it. Nothing like cheese to clog the arteries.
have read through your thread . interresting find. increased mood would definately be a plus for me . i have a question. whilst trying to achieve keto, would you be able to have a post workout simple carb drink to replenish glycogen or would this defeat the purpose?
Snoopa: Thanks for your support. I really appreciate it.
Chump: You should look into a Targeted Keto Diet or TKD which is getting your carbs in based around your workouts rather than CKD which includes refeeds every 7-14days.
What was your diet like on keto?
Did you keep you saturated fats down? Saturated have a negative effect on cholesterol levels more so than consuming cholesterol itself (from memory).
So things like eggs which have a high saturated fat content eaten in large amounts as well as a lot of read meat etc may be why your cholesterol was so high. You also have to take into consideration genetics as well. Some people will naturally have higher levels of cholesterol and react worse to fatty foods.
I always think your either prone to heart disease or cancer... they both suck.
While I was dieting - I tried to say away from red meat as much as possible and if I did eat red meat I stuck to rump steak as it was easier to cut that fat off. Most of my meals were chicken/rice/green veggies/oats/almonds
Hey union, my diet was relatively clean but like I already mentioned to others I was eating up to 6 or so whole eggs and cheese daily which I am sure didn't help my cholesterol levels. Ive since cut right back on the eggs and cheese and plan on getting my levels checked in a couple of months. Other than that my main food sources are chicken breast-skin off and tuna. Vegies are cauli and brocilli. I probably eat lean red meat once a week with all visible fat cut off, twice a week tops.
Cheers again everyone for their input!
I can't see the problem with eating saturated fats and cholesterol as at one point I was having an average of 20-30 eggs a day. How was my cholesterol count? Dangerously low and needed to be brought back up. Although I'm a fan of real food that is unmodified in anyway (no low fat or no fat anything), I'm not a fan of keto diets or any other extreme diet for that matter. However what I'm a big fan of is stabilising one's insulin levels and insuring that one has no insulin resistance problems.
This issue can be tackled through knowing what foods and how food high GI foods are to be mixed with low ones to bring the total GI index number down. Furthermore, activity has a profound effect on your cells insulin receptors by making them more receptive to this doubled edge of a hormone. In a nut shell, the more active you are, the more sensitive you working muscle cells are to insulin's effect, and the opposite is also true.
So please, don't fall for this eggs and fat will do this or that damage type of hysteria that is propagated by ill informed folks. You can cut all the eggs from your diet and still have your liver manufacture between about 2000mg of cholesterol a day.
I may have found your problem though by reading what you've written.
You're not eating enough fat! You talk about eating lean meat and skinless chicken breast. Why?
I can go on and on with this but it suffice to say that you can not bring both your carbs as well as your fat and still maintain good health. You need the fats as well as the cholesterol to be healthy.
Also, get another blood test since at times, blood laboratories really do stuff things up( I’m told by an insider about this).
A high serum cholesterol count indicates to me that you may be suffering from a high C - reactive protein (which in plain English means you've got inflammation on the inside and possibly thick blood viscosity).
Cholesterol is not an enemy but is here to treat the scars that we cause to ourselves on the inside. We have to look at why these scars are being caused and fix that because low cholesterol count does not in anyway shape or form mean there's a less chance of someone having a heart attack or a stroke. Check up on every word I write and please don't take what I write lightly. Thank you
Now I really better be going...
Fadi.
I was mentioned before so I'll throw my 2 cents in.
First off, I'm not sure of your medical history or background so I can only help so much. The high Glucose reading is interesting and in general your lipid levels are quite high. I'm thinking this could've been a problem before hand, but would really need a test prior to these to get a real accurate reading. Alas, this won't help so lets press on shall we? I'll go through the diet first, then we can go onto excersize portion which seems to not of been mentioned properly as of yet, only touched upon by Fadi. When I was eating Anabolic Diet style (basically weekly refeeds) it was common for me to have a carton of eggs. Just for breakfast. The only steak I'd buy would be rump steak and I'd never ever cut or trim the fat what so ever. If I felt like a "leaner" meat, I would poor on the Extra Virgin Olive Oil, not to cook with, but as a garnish. Don't heat EVOO. So my Saturated Fats where 50% of my fat intake, 35% Mono 15% Poly (rough estimate, but close) and to make sure everything was on the steady I had a blood test done, because I was also skeptical. Fat is the Devil and all. They read like this:
Total Cholesterol: 4.3
Triglycerides: 0.6
HDL: 2.5
LDL: 1.5
HDL/LDL Ratio: 1.7
This was after 2 years of eating this way. Which to me means there is no correlation what so ever with dietary cholesterol effecting blood cholesterol levels. It doesn't work that way. High fat diets didn't negatively effect my bloods at all, which makes me think you may have had this as a problem anyway. A possible side effect of the medication you had to take along with weight gain? I'm not sure, but it does sound likely. Or at least due to this weight gain, you bloods have been blind sided completely. 40kg is A LOT to gain in 12 months. Now first thing, if you'd like to keep eating this way. Up your fats, don't eat lean meat. Anything with "Low Fat" on it is off limits, as generally the fat that IS in it, is not the kind we want or of very good quality. Get yourself some Organic Virgin Coconut Oil and EVOO to garnish with, not cook with. Macadamia nut oil is fantastic too. And on that note, any nut in it's original form is better than oil's. The more natural the better. Try to make sure all of the food you're eating is as close to it's natural form as possible. Meats, Nuts, Extra Virgin Oils, Green Leafy Vegetables. I can't stress that enough, eat as much crucifirous vegetables as possible. They'll do much better at keeping your body alkaline and in general, healthy. If you're counting carbs, DO NOT COUNT green vegetables, you can't possibly eat enough of them to effect Ketosis or Insulin levels, especially when you'll be eating them with fat AND protein. Unless you're somehow eating 1-2kg's worth each meal. Also eat your vegies in general, just keep an eye on the more starchy ones. I.e - Corn, Potato, Beets etc.
Now, before I get into the excersize bit, I'll need you to tell me what you're doing currently. How are feeling while doing it and in general? Energy levels etc. What is your current weight now? How is it progressing? Once you answer those I can help you that little bit more.
Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, things have been rather busy lately.
-Mitch.
