    Question Taste in mouth? Keto?

    Hi,

I have read on a few keto posts about some sort of bad taste/bad breath that ppl get in their mouths when on keto. Im not running keto my self, just very low carbs atm, but i do rowing which burns alot of fuel as its an endurance sport, and atm i have a taste in my mouth sort of like iv licked a soap bar or something? is this a keto thing and iv reached ketosis without meaning to? Or something else?

Sorry if this is a ridiculouse Q ppl, but i just wanted to check. Ta.

Its hard to tell, how low are your carbs? Usually it takes 2 sessions of full body exercise to deplete muscle glycogen which would trigger (without presence of carbs) ketosis.

My macros atm are as follows.

    Protein – 294g= 1176 Calories,
    Carbohydrates 120g = 480 Calories
    Fat – 90g = 810 Calories

I think i could easily depleat my glycogen stores in two day on zero carbs. My rowing sessions go for 1.5-2.5hrs. Usually at about 80-95% max hr. And rowing is definatly a full body workout.

Iv been running these macros just for two days so far, (cutting atm to make lightweight), so i figured it was probably this if anything.

Well yea it usually takes 2 days on low carb + depletion of muscle/liver glycogen.

So although not 100% sure, there's a possability, although the experts advocate less than 50g carbs for keto... but rules are ment to be broken and we live different lives so there's always a chance.

Why are you pursuing a low carb diet if you are competing in an endurance sport?

    Just curious.

As CT said I was under the impression that you would need around the 50-60g mark or lower of carbs to get into Keto, although everyone is different and if your doing enough exercise i guess there would always be a chance.

If your interested you could always get some ketostix and see, if nothing else would be interesting to see someone on 120g get into ketosis.

Nah not ketosis bro, take 3-4 days to reach, and you need less than 50g of carbs.

Im not quite sure what it could be? I get a shit taste after a big workout as said when depleting your glycogen stores.

I dont think you can definately say that it is NOT ketosis, everyone is different and react differently to carbs, when coming out of ketosis byt having a carbs up some may take 1 day to get back into keto and others could take upto 5 or 6 days.

So who's to say you can get into ketosis on 120g of carbs a day, especially if your training for long hours?

    Possible, but I highly doubt.
The point of keto is to not use carbs as fuel which he is giving his body.. And it doesn't swap and change..

Your carb intake is too high if your doing Keto. Drop your carbs to less than 40/50g a day depending on yor size.

Bad taste is prob from Keto. But your suposed to increase yor water intake dramatically, if you do this I reckon the bad taste will go.

Also this is just a theory, I dont have any facts to back it up.

long distance runners' Heart rate is about 140, Ultimately in the "fat burning zone" whatever that my be for the particular person, they use fat as their source of energy as the carbs go too quick. So taking this into account, I dont see why ketosis wouldnt be a good diet for an person doing an endurance sport.

Not fact!! but its what i think.

Im currently making weight for rowing this season. 72.5kg or under. So most lightweights have super low fat levels in season. about 8-5% at the elite level. Im on low carbs just till my fat levels are where i want, then i will up the carbs but maintain bf% and weight.

Thanks, i will increase my water and see if that helps. I can see how you made your theory on keto being ok for endurance athletes, but its misfounded sorry. I would try to explain it but its too much typing for my liking sorry! :P

But anyone who has done VCE PE 3&4 will be able to explain it. Basically carbs = endurance athletes friend

Note: im not actually trying do do keto, just low carb to snip off a final bit of fat is all.

Hmmm, not entirely sure sorry. pretty sure it was after training when it first started. Iv upped my carbs since then, and its gone. but i may lower them down to 100g for a few days just to see what happens.

ketones are more concentrated in the blood after training, so that may say that your dipping into ketosis during/after training, get the keto sticks to give you a better indication if you want, when are you having your carbs in relation to your training?
