How do you read the keto sticks?

I am trying to figure out how to read the keto sticks.
isn't the more purple it is, the better? I mean the more purple the more fat the body burns?
    (so +++ the best?)

secondly when is the best time to check, the mext morning after the first day?

When do the readings first show up?

    Hi Milan,

The darker the sticks is definately NOT the way to go with ketosis.

Ketone bodies are a byproduct of fat breakdown in the liver - but they themselves are used for energy by some organs - mostly the brain.

After all the organs that can use them, do, only the excess ketones are excreted in the urine.

The other thing about ketones is that they travel in the bloodstream like everything else - but you definately don't want too many of them there - in extreme cases this can lead to a condition called keto-acidosis which is not a good state to be in at all. Basically the presence of too many ketons changes the pH of the blood - and leads to al sorts of problems .... but having said that, I haven't heard of any research that says that a ketogenic diet can lead to such a state.

Anyway, the upshot of all of that is that you should aim for one of the 2 lightest readings - extended time in the darker regions is not good - probably indicates that you haven't been drinking enough water, or have been consuming too much dietary fat.

Also keep in mind that because only excess is in the urine - you can appear by the strips to drop out of ketosis - but really you are still there - but your body is using all the ketones it is producing.

Sorry for being so long winded.

    okaaaaaaaaaay!!!!!

well thank you for that answer!!!!

how long does it actually take to show up on the sticks? Would be one or two days would it?

Today is my first day...and it remains normal...
But I have been pretty strict... I did eat under 30g or carbs!!!

I saw TV the other day and they were saying that it is not only fat that breaks down in ketosis.

Milan: Depends what you've done ... if you've done anything to start ridding your body of its glycogen stores (eg some high intensity cardio, a good weights workout) or been taking any disposal agents (ALA, Chromium Picolinate) then you might see it as soon as the next day or so ... but generally I'd say more likely after 2-3 days.

For the meantime, your body is still kinda holding off on slipping into ketosis - hoping as it were, that some more carbs will come its way ... takes that amount of time for the body to up-regulate the necessary hormone production for ketosis to occur.

    Kazan - could you elaborate?

    hello scion,
on my first day I actually did quite a bit of exercise, ca 55 minutes of intensive cardio. (the machine said I burned about 1000 cal). I tend to do that twice to three times per week. In addition I do three times per week weight training for a bit over one hour, but that not on the cardio days. I am trying to stay under 30 g of Cabohydrates per day. And I am reading every label.
The only food I take that has major carbo hydrates is soy milk (but I only take 50ml per day, and that in the morning with my coffee, that equals to 5g of carbs).
