    Oats and Protein

Hi all, have been eating rolled oats mixed with protein shake for cutting. But was thinking would it be better to continue this while bulking as well so that i dont need to buy a mass gainer?

    Anyone else do this?

Peanut butter sounds like a champion idea.

but are there any negatives for doing this? I would assume Mass Gainers would have extra nutrients added to help with the bulking process? wouldnt it be better to just buy a powder form of carbs/protein?

Or does adding actual food to a protein drink yield better results? Can anyone clarify?

It is unlikely a mass gainer is better for you than actual food - i.e., eating spinach confers benefits beyond popping a multivatimin.

Oats for eg is a good source of souble fibre. Most nuts are reasonably nutritious, having moderate nutrient density and generally reasonable fatty acid profiles.. Or you could (if you wanted more carbs) add a banana + cinnonom to taste.

Well, of course at the end of the day i would opt for whatever is better for me. So i'll try making my own mass gainer this time when i bulk and see how i go.

I'm currently bulking and I drink oats in my shakes.

You should swap rolled oats for oat bran. Oat bran, as far as I can tell, is finely crushed/diced oats, which would make it easier to drink when compared to normal rolled oats which are larger.

My shake consists of 1/3 litre of milk, creatine, glutamine, mass gain powder (that once I run out of my current tub I'll swap for straight whey), 2 raw eggs, and oat bran.
I used to try drinking the oats in water (or other low viscosity liquids) and the texture difference makes it hard to drink. (side note: If you mix raw eggs with milk you can barely taste the eggs.) I've started adding oats to this high viscosity (aka 'thick') shake and even though it's hard to drink to start with, I've got used to it, and the thickness of the shake helps with the consuming of solid oats. Make sure you're constantly shaking or stirring the drink before each chug or you'll find all the oats settle to the bottom.

I don't add peanut butter, I don't think it would mix very well within a shake. Also... I can barely stand the shit! I eat two x 2 peanut butter sandwiches each day (with lots of PB). It's a stuggle... but it's just a means to an end.

You're nearly there, Oat Bran is just one part of the outer husk of a grain, which along with the germ makes up "whole grain" - I'm a farmers boy... and a geek

oat bran has 60% more fibre. If ur eating lots of it, this can cause the gas from past experience

Don't have it as a brekky substitute though which may be what you were doing before?

I am making the assumption you normally have it as a brekky because some oats in a protein shake can be a good brekky for a cutter. It isn't that great for the same cutter if it is taken more oftne - due to the carbs.

So if I am corret - don't keep this up as a brekky thing now you are a bulker because I doubt you get too many oats in your shake. Take this often through the day but a big bowl of porridge with protein powder stirred in is a much better bulking brekky.

So what's the difference between rolled oats and oat bran?
I assumed they are the same thing, just one is rolled, the other crushed/diced into finer pieces.

If you want the whole grain, you have rolled oats or 'Steel cut oats' which are the diced version.

CMinOZ is just saying that Oat Bran is not the whole grain. Stick with the whole grain. You could always preblend a bag until it starts to form a powder.

Are you wanting this shake for postworkout, a meal replacement or a breakfast?

If its post workout, put your oats into a blender first and make them into a fine powder and don't add anything other than your WPC or WPI...
If its a breakfast thing, add some mixed berries, a banana, and a raw egg to the oats and protien powder...
If its simply a meal replacement shake then you need to know what macro's you want from in and find foods that will fit the profile alongside the oats and protein, probably some nuts or an egg or peanut butter or some macadamia oil to get your quality fats in...
Today I will do what you won't so Tomorrow I can do what you can't!

hey scottie, it will be all those things. Last time i bulked i was having maybe 3-4 shakes a day. breakfast, afternoon tea, PWO etc.

but the first time i only used mass gainer + milk. this time i was gonna make my own, so i'll make all those you mentioned for breakfast, meal replacement and Post workout.
