training late at night - post workout meal

    Hi Guys

Just after your advise, i train at about 8pm weeknights, so i finish training round 9pm, and hit the bed at about 10pm.

Given this, do you think its best to consume a post workout shake of water, wpi, 1/2 banana and 1/2 cup oats....as i dont want to consume a meal before hitting the bed...or what do you guys think is good, given this time frame and that sleep 1hr after training.

Just to let you know, for 6 months i was consuming a small protein based + carb meal before bed, and ive put on a little fat.

sorry if this been commented on before, i search but didnt get anything too specific...

    thanks for your help!

I reckon a steak would be the way to go. With maybe a small amount of pasta/rice on the side to give you your post workout carbs.

Well thats what I would have, anyway.

Any reason you don't want to consume a meal before bed/pwo?

If you gained fat, its because you were eating too many calories throughout the day and has nothing to do with your pre-bed meal.

I would lower cals from an earlier meal and move them to your pwo meal.

    HI Andrew

    thanks for your reply.

I know the PWO meal is crutical in body development, but eating a meal then going right to bed, i know the body needs nutirents etc to grow when at rest, but given the metabolism slows down during sleep, my mind thinks that a meal, although good, will lead to gain of little fat....

just my though, and i'd thought to gain some knowledge from the very wise people of SM :-)

Well im on a cut atm and will start a log if i lose 1 more kg ;) just so i know its not water weight.

Last week i had my PWO/Last meal at like 10pm and last meal at 12am.

I dont eat any high gi/simple carbs only cause i know my body is really carb sensitive.

So a PWO meal as your pre bed meal is fine.

Not to sure about the simple/high gi carbs before bed though

thanks SeeZ.....that was also a worry for me, as straight after training i like to consume simple carbs, then my pwo meal....

thanks for your tip, and let us know how the cut progresses!

unless you are eating a carbs AND fat post workout, and eating in excess of your calorie needs there's no reason why you should be putting on fat post workout. Regardless of what time it is your body still needs to replenish glycogen stores after a session, and even though your going to sleep your metabolism is still elevated for a prolonged period. Maybe try and look at what your doing the rest of the day in terms of food intake.

Like the others have said, look closer at total daily cals.
When I'm away at work, I train at 6:30pm, so finish at about 7:45pm, straight after, I have a shake with water and two pieces of bread, then at 9:30pm just before bed I have a shake with 250ml full fat milk. This does not result in fat gain as I have my daily cals in check. I eat dinner before my work out (meat, veg and some carb)
